<h1 align="left" class="title">Berja Plain</h1>

<p> This area, commonly known as the <em>‘Hoya Berja’ </em>is in general a large plain of fertile lands surrounded by mountains. Their makeup has allowed the development of an important agricultural focus, reaching a peak during Arab rule, using the abundant water supplies as a major boost. Settlements grew up around the water systems – pipes and ditches that remain to this day. While the actual crops have changed with the times – the mulberry trees common in Arab times, through to the grapes of the 19th and 20th century and now to the intensive farming under plastic greenhouses, the locals have never lost their attachment to the land and their knowledge and general agricultural know-how. This is clearly shown in the supreme quality of the produce, grown under the strict control systems available when working in greenhouses. The main crops grown here are cucumbers, peppers, green beans, courgettes, aubergines, water melons, melons and tomatoes. <br />
By working in greenhouses the farmers are able to create a microclimate perfectly adjusted to each individual crop, and due to the many hours of winter sunshine, are able to produce without break throughout the year. <br />
Currently there is major growth in the ecological farming sector – substituting chemicals for natural products wherever possible or natural biological products. The innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the locals means this fight is now being won.<br />
