 | Its distinctive beauty makes it a unique landscape in Europe. Bordering the Sierra of Los Filabres, to the north, and Alhamilla, to the south, the desert of Tabernas was declared an Area of Natural Interest in 1989 due to its varied geomorphologic formations and its complex ecology. Its great range of typical desert vegetation is, without doubt, one of the main reasons why this area was chosen to film numerous "westerns".
Plants in danger of extinction such as the beautiful pink sempervivums which grow next to the watercourses are the most distinctive species of the desert. Colonies of rosebays provide a habitat for waterfowl such as green finches, turtledoves, as well as amphibians such as natterjack toads and spinyfooted lizards. | |
