Balanegra Coastline

This is a thriving and vibrant coastal and agricultural area. It was made part of the Berja District in the 16th century as compensation for coastal losses suffered when Adra became its own Municipal District. It is also the reason why, curiously, Berja, a town 20 minutes inland ‘owns’ over 2km of coastline. Dominating this part of the coast is the old ‘Alhamilla Tower’.
Balanegra beach is one of the few to the West of Almería, whose character is not regressive, ie; it does not lose sand. Neither does it fall into the category where the buildings are of sufficient height and size to cause a ‘screen effect’.
Today, Balanegra is an interesting tourist focal point, mainly residential. Well connected to the main duel carriageway (Autovía del Mediterraneo) it offers peace and tranquillity and excellent water quality off shore.

Alhamilla Tower

This structure was built at the beginning of the 16th century as a look out tower to protect from Barbarians or pirates attacking this stretch of coast from the sea. It marks the boundary between Berja and Adra.  Set on a hill top is has a cylindrical shape and measure 12m in height and dominated the landscape for two leagues of the south coast.
